About Us

Electrify Bundeena is a campaign of the Sutherland Shire Environment Centre, run by community volunteers. We are working to achieve 100% net renewables in Bundeena’s energy usage and to phase out all fossil fuel use in our local community.

We hope our work will provide a model for other places in Australia to take meaningful climate action at the community level.

This project was inspired by the work of the Australian renewable energy and electrification guru, Saul Griffith. Saul's book The Big Switch lays out a pathway to achieving huge cuts in our carbon emissions through the total electrification of our homes and workplaces, powered by cheap, clean, renewables. Here are a few of Saul's thoughts on the topic:

"The future is electric. Electrified appliances and vehicles are our secret weapons in the fight against climate change."

"We can run the same country we do today using less than half the energy, just by electrifying all our energy."

– Saul Griffith, inventor, engineer, scientist and author

FAQS

Who is funding this project?

We are actively pursuing grant funding for the project. So far we have been lucky enough to secure a LEAF grant from the Sutherland Shire Environment Centre to get the project started and have the local support of our friends from Keep Bundeena Beautiful and their Boomerang Bags group. We continue to look for ways to raise money for the project, but even if none of those get a result, we're going to get this done anyway!

One of the key things which will make this project attractive to potential funders will be the willingness of our local community to step up and make the transition to full electrification. You can help us make this happen by giving whatever support you can. We are 100% driven by local volunteers.

What about electrifying Maianbar?

We canvassed Maianbar for four volunteers so this program could be rolled out there too but received no interest as yet for a working group from Maianbar to work with us to replicate the project there. We would love to hear from volunteers from Maianbar - please go to our volunteer sign up form or email us at info@electrifybundeena.org.au.

How can I help?
